Dr. Gopal Marathe (1942-2020)

MMLA announces with deep sorrow the passing of Gopal Marathe, a friend and accomplished musician who appeared on our stage countless times over the years as accompanist for many other fine artists.

Gopal Marathe lived in the US since 1972 and was a multi-faceted artist—composer, singer, harmonium player, music teacher and choreographer.  A creator of music for many bhajans, gazals, and dance dramas, he gave light music and gazal concerts in the United States and Canada as well as in India. He performed as a singer and accompanist with Sitara Devi and Zakir Hussain and as a harmonium player with Lakshmi Shankar, Girija Devi, Pandit Jasraj, Rajan and Sajan Mishra, and many others.  He taught Hindustani music in Southern California since 1980.  Many of you will remember him for his concept and direction of 'Jyotine Tejachi Arati' program last year organized by MMLA.

Gopal Marathe had a Ph.D in microbiology and taught Microbiology and Biology  at RCC, Riverside, California and was an adjunct faculty member teaching North Indian Music at Cal Poly, Pomona. Please send your condolence message to nishadmarathe@gmail.com.
